Lara Vieceli leads the queen of the mountains classification in Burgos

During a hot and long breakaway of 81km at the first stage of the Vuelta a Burgos 2022, Lara Vieceli managed to win the one and only mountain prize of today’s stage.

Vieceli leads now the maintain classification and will start the next stage in the red jersey. Laura Asencio finished the stage as top finisher of the team with place 19th. The Belgian Lotte Kopecky wins the first stage in a bunch sprint.

After 9 km todays breakaway formed with Lara Vieceli, Matilde Vitillo from Bepink and Andrea Ramírez Fregoso from Massi Tactic. The group of three could manage to hold a gap from 1:23. In the meantime, at Alto de Cotogallo Vieceli won the mountain prize before Vitillo and Ramírez Fregoso. The breakaway was caught after 90km and soon after the echelons started.

The bunch split in half with Laura Asencio, Lana Eberle and Hanna Nilsson sitting comfortably in the first group. The aim was to sit on Emma Norsgaard's wheel, but Ascncio lost contact after a roundabout on the last 1000m and sprinted in the end to the 19th place. We will keep fighting in the next 3 stages.

Vieceli said, "Yesterday when I studied the stage and I saw such an affordable Qom, I was thinking "why don't give a try? Maybe it will work." It worked and I am very satisfied.

Then it was almost always headwind, it was just impossible to hope that a breakaway could survive. But it was a long time I wasn't trying something for myself and I am happy I could bring our Ceratizit jersey on to the podium today."
