Alonso adds a silver medal in a sprint to the line

Sandra Alonso won the silver medal in the Spanish National Road Race Championships.

After taking bronze in the time trial less than 24 hours earlier, Sandra Alonso from Torrevieja sprinted to 2nd place, taking home a silver medal in the Spanish Road Race Championships.

The 130km race held in Mallorca saw a demanding race, across undulating terrain, which ended with two laps of a circuit close to the capital of Palma, both laps including a 5km climb with an average gradient of 5.8%.

UAE's Mavi Garcia led the race solo from around 60km to go, and despite a chase from behind no one was able to catch the rider who was racing on home soil.

In the sprint for second place, Sandra Alonso won the silver medal convincingly, capping off a successful Spanish championships.

After the race, Sandra said: "It was a super fast race since the start, a lot of teams were trying to make a break, but finally Mavi went and the race was a more constant rhythm. This was better for me because I was not having very good feelings in the first 2 hour of race… when we entered in the circuit I knew I had to pass the climb in the first group and that was my chance.

I was fully concentrated and controlling the riders who were still in the front group, we arrive around 7-8 girls to the finish line and I knew I was the strongest for the sprint.
I am super happy with this second place and makes me trust to keep fighting. This weekend shows all the work that has been done this year and this is really a pleasure for me."
