UCI Women’s WorldTour debut for Team WNT Pro Cycling

Wednesday 7th June will see Team WNT Pro Cycling, line up for their UCI Women’s WorldTour debut, in The Women’s Tour, a five-day stage race in the UK, arguably the world’s biggest race on the female calendar.

The 2017 edition of the race will take it’s five stages through Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire and stage 4 heads to Derbyshire starting and finishing in Chesterfield, a stone’s throw away from WNT UK headquarters in Sheffield.

For the first time in The Women’s Tour history the race heads into the British capital, with the final stage starting and finishing on Regent Street St James on an iconic 6km circuit which takes in the likes of Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall on every lap of the 14-lap race. Team WNT Pro Cycling’s Olympic Champion, Katie Archibald unveiled the route today alongside the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. We’ve attached the stage 5 route above, so you can get a head start on planning where’s best to watch.

Since the race started in 2014 it has grown to be one of the most loved, well organised and exciting races within female cycling. Famous for the enormous crowds, the thousands of school children lining the route and world-class rider line-up with previous editions of the race having been won by Marianne Vos (2014), Lisa Brennaur (2015) and former British world champion Lizzie Deignan retaining the yellow jersey in 2016.

The Women’s Tour will be one of the teams main targets, racing on homesoil in such an illustrious event. It will be the highest ranked race the team will compete in, and looks set to be one of the toughest editions of The Women’s Tour since it started.

WNT fans will be able to follow all the action as the team takes on the biggest challenge of the year with highlights of the race being shown in the evening after every stage on ITV4 and available on demand via the ITV Hub. Team WNT Pro Cycling will be determined to make their mark on the race and take the opportunity with both hands to compete against the best women’s teams in the world.

WNT UK MD and Team Manager, Tony Pennington says,

‘I am thrilled that the team has been chosen to race in such a prestigious event in our first year of being a UCI Women’s Team. It will be a hard challenge, racing against so many world class riders but we’ll be getting our riders to the start line in the best possible shape to take on that challenge.’

Olympic Champion, Katie Archibald says ‘I raced in The Women’s Tour back in 2015, it was one of my favourite road races I have competed in, and I am thoroughly looking forward to focusing on the road in 2017, to race it again. The crowds were phenomenal, the passion they all have cheering you on is something special, it gives you that extra push when you’re already on the limit’.
